You can get a grand view of Jena and the Saale valley on a walk along the Kernberge, the shell lime cliffs that surround Jena. The Thüringenweg route covers 440 kilometres, passing churches, cloisters and castles and giving you a fantastic impression of Thuringian nature and culture. Staying near Jena, you can walk to Thalbürgel where the Romanic cloister church makes a very rewarding hiking destination. The Klassikerstraße (Classics Road) makes a cultural tour of Thuringia on the footsteps of Goethe, Schiller and other great thinkers and ends in Jena, where Schiller once taught.
Jena is worth a visit at any time of year either for a weekend break or short holiday.
